A coproduktion of Edition KUNSTRADIO with TRANSIT and the Ars Electronica Center, Linz.

HORIZONTAL RADIO was a completely new kind of world-wide, interactive project that involved over 20 radio stations (both public and private), the Internet and live events at 24 network nodes in Europe, Australia, Canada and Isreal. HORIZONTAL RADIO was active non-stop for 24 hours from 12:00 on June 22 untill 12:00 on June 23, 1995.

HORIZONTAL RADIO was like a living organism comprised of a vast network of local performances, radio broadcasts (and re-broadcasts) and internet projects. A documentation of such a project is, naturally, completely impossible. Every location in the network received and recorded a different version of the project - material was sampled and remixed and retransmitted so that it was no longer possible to identify the source or the author.

After long discussion between ORF Kunstradio, Ars Electronica Center and Transit it was decided to ask Rupert Huber to make a selection from the more than 100 hours of sound material recorded in Vienna.

The result is less a "documentation" of HORIZONTAL RADIO than a fascinating listening experience - to be heard in sequence or at random. But most of all the samples on these 2 CDs should be used/recycled for new compositions, radio works, performances or future world-wide events.
