"In 1984 I was working in an indie record store in Dallas called VVV, and my spare time was mostly spent putting together little home recording projects on an assortment of cheesy gear. I got approached by Mark Ridlen to collaborate on a one-off gig to provide music for a party to be held at a cool boutique called Flaunt. Mark had been asked to put this together by owner Nick Hamblen, whom we both knew to be a pretty forward-thinking and open-minded individual, and so we couldn’t pass up this great opportunity to do something crazy.
Bringing Rob Wilks on board, we all decided to create a 45 minute backing tape of grooves and various sounds that we could play along with on the day of the show, thus doubling the thickness of texture we could create with our available gear. We used a Fostex 4-track cassette deck to lay down a few stretches of grooves; some from pre-existing records, and some from original songs that Rob had brought to the project. We left big gaps of silence between these backing tracks. Then, when we got to the end of the cassette, we just flipped it over and recorded other backing tracks in the gaps. Astute readers will realize that we now had a 45 minute tape filled with backing tracks, every other one of which would play backwards. At the end of the set, we could then just flip the tape over and start playing to a whole new, although eerily similar, program. Voila! A 45 minute tape is now 90 minutes of music!
On the day of the party, we set up our mini-mountain of gear on a big table in the claustrophobic back room of the store, right next to the bathroom, and piped the sound out to the PA speakers which were set up in the main room. A few people wandered back there during our sets and said things like, “oh, are you guys going to do something later?”
After the party, I was left with a 1/4” reel-to-reel recording of the whole thing. I then edited out the less interesting parts and re-sequenced some of the material to come up with the two 30 minute tracks you have here, for copying onto 60-minute cassettes. I can’t remember how many copies I made and distributed, but it certainly wasn’t over fifty. I gave a few to Mark, Rob, Nick, and whoever else I could think might enjoy it. I still have one, plus the master cassette they were duped from, which was the source for this edition. None were sold, all the rest were given away." —Mark Griffin
