St. Cyril Academy, Danville, Pennsylvania, is a first class accredited girls' high school for resident and day students. Opened in 1922 by the Sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius — a religious Congregation founded in Scranton by the Reverend Matthew Jankola in 1909 — the Academy offers a complete academic course along with business education and home economics.
Music and song hold a distinctive place in the spirit of the Academy. A Slovak proverb notes: "Kde Slovenka, tarn je spev." "When a Slovak girl is around, you will surely hear song." And when more than 100 Slovak girls are around you will hear song a hundredfold.
In 1957 the Voice of America caught on tape the rich spontaneity and varying moods of Slovak folksongs as ren-dered by the St. Cyril Academy Chorus. These tongs and others were later transmitted to Slovakia in regular pro-grams to demonstrate to Slovak hearts in the fatherland that America is a land of freedom where one's cultural heritage is not suppressed, but, on the contrary, allowed full sway. The programs emphasize the fact that the singers are for the most part American Slovaks of the third and forth generations.
The students' chorus possesses a voluminous repertoire of Slovak melodies from the land of their parents and grandparents, from the Land of Thirty Thousand Songs!
