White Label with Black Stamp on one side and 'Discomagic Exclusive UK Promo Release' on the other side.Other etchings: A Porky Prime Cut
While the almost totality of Disco Magic UK releases were pressed in Italy (because of favourable costs and credit terms) DMX501 was actually pressed in UK at A.S.L. in London and mastered and cut from the original DAT at Porkys (as the etching on the vinyl shows). It was considerably more expensive to manufacture in England than in Italy but that was a request of the original Italian licensor.
The later DMGX914 release from 1995 instead was mastered and cut in Italy and manufactured at Astro Records as usual.
Because of a mistake at the factory, the first 12 Test Pressings of DMX501 have the wrong catalogue number (DMX 5). There is a separate entry here on Discogs for that one (not to be confused with DMX 005). After checking the test presings, the mistake was corrected: the "5" was scratched out and 501 etched in. The plates are exactly the same and have the "Porky's" etching.
A first batch was pressed on white label with the DMUK Promo generic label on Side A and the white label on the B side was stamped in PINK. The second pressing has a BLACK stamp (vinyl quality is identical). The A-side labels themselves were printed in Italy and came from the stock held at the Italian factory.
From the third pressing onwards the full label on Side B was added (again the labels were printed in Italy).
This record, when released on DMX501 was the first that Disco Magic UK licensed from a company that was NOT Discomagic in Italy.
Discomagic in Italy did not have the rights to this record, only Disco Magic UK. That is why Discomagic in Italy did a remake version (not with the original Artist) in competition with the DMUK release - OUT3547. Although there was some friction there between the two companies, there was nothing that DMUK could do under the circumstances.
Discomagic in Italy justified themselves by saying that buying original copies from DMUK would have been too expensive for them to sell on...
DMX501 (and "DMX 5" test pressings) and DMGX914 are the ONLY releases here on Discogs to feature the ORIGINAL mixes of Apollonia by the REAL artist INDIE as on the original Italian import LW 001 from 1990.
In fact, the Disco Magic UK releases have two extra mixes (on A1 ad B2) that did not appear in the original LW 001 release from 1990 but were on the DAT Master received from the original record company in Italy. The Instrumental version that is on the original 1990 LW 001 does NOT appear on the Disco Magic UK releases as it was on a separate DAT that the Italian company could no longer find.
